The Search Page Indian Users See Is Not the One You Optimised For

If you last audited your SEO strategy six months ago, you're already behind. Google's AI Overviews now appear on a significant chunk of commercial and informational queries in India — and they're pulling answers from sources that may or may not include your website. Meanwhile, voice search on mobile has crossed a tipping point in Tier 2 and Tier 3 Indian cities, driven by users who find typing in English on a small screen genuinely inconvenient.

These two shifts — AI-generated answer boxes and voice-first search behaviour — aren't coming. They're here. And most Indian businesses are still optimising for a search result page that no longer represents how their customers actually search.

AI Overviews: What's Actually Happening in India

Google's AI Overviews (formerly Search Generative Experience) are now live in India across English queries, with Hindi and regional language rollouts happening in patches. Here's what this means practically:

  • Zero-click answers are rising. When AI Overviews answer a question completely, a significant share of users never click through. Studies from the US market show click-through rates dropping 15–30% on queries where AI Overviews appear. India will follow a similar curve.
  • The sources Google cites are not always the top-ranking pages. Google's AI pulls from pages it considers authoritative and well-structured — which often means pages with clear headings, concise answers, and proper schema markup. A page ranking #4 can get cited in an AI Overview while the #1 result gets skipped.
  • Commercial queries are increasingly affected. Queries like "best accounting software for small business India" or "which health insurance is right for salaried employees" are now regularly showing AI Overviews. If you sell products or services in these categories and you're not structuring content for AI citation, you're invisible at the moment of highest intent.

Voice Search in India: The Numbers You Should Know

According to Google's own data shared at various India-specific events, over 28% of searches in India are voice-based. That number is almost certainly higher in vernacular language contexts. When someone asks their phone "kaunsa laptop 30,000 mein best hai" or "near me AC repair service", they're not typing — and the query structure is completely different from what traditional keyword tools surface.

Voice queries are:

  • Longer — typically 7–10 words vs. 2–4 for typed searches
  • Conversational — phrased as questions, not keyword fragments
  • Locally inflected — users often include city names, neighbourhoods, or "near me" modifiers
  • Action-oriented — "where can I buy", "how do I fix", "who does" — these signal immediate intent

If your content is optimised for typed keywords like "laptop under 30000", it may not surface for the voice query version of the same intent. The semantic gap is real.

What You Need to Change — Specifically

1. Restructure Your Content Around Questions, Not Keywords

This is the single most high-leverage change most Indian businesses can make right now. Take your top 10 pages and rewrite the opening section to directly answer the most obvious question a user would have. Use an H2 like "What does [your service] cost in [city]?" or "How long does [process] take?" — then answer it in 40–60 words, clearly and completely.

This is exactly the format Google's AI Overviews and voice search results pull from. You're not writing for a bot — you're writing for a user who wants a fast, trustworthy answer, and the AI is selecting on their behalf.

2. Add FAQ Schema to Every Key Page

If you're not using FAQ schema, you're leaving structured data on the table. FAQ schema tells Google explicitly that a piece of content is in question-and-answer format — which makes it far more likely to be pulled into AI Overviews and featured snippets.

Practically: identify 4–6 genuine questions your customers ask (check your support emails, WhatsApp queries, sales call notes) and add them to each service or product page with proper FAQ schema markup. This is one of the fastest technical wins available right now, and most Indian SMB websites haven't done it. Our Answer Engine Optimisation work for clients consistently shows this as a top-three lever for AI visibility.

3. Build Content in Hindi and Regional Languages — Not as Translation, But as Originals

Google's AI Overviews in Hindi are expanding. Vernacular voice queries are massive and largely uncontested — most brands haven't created genuine Hindi-language content that answers questions well. This is a significant opportunity gap, especially for businesses serving Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets.

Don't translate your English pages using Google Translate and call it done. Write original content in Hindi (or Tamil, Telugu, Marathi — wherever your customers are) that mirrors how people actually phrase questions in that language. The competitive density in Hindi search is far lower than English for most commercial categories.

4. Optimise for "Near Me" and Local Intent at Scale

Voice searches with local intent — "best CA near me", "plumber in Andheri", "gym open now in Koramangala" — are dominated by Google Business Profile results and local SEO signals. If you haven't fully optimised your Google Business Profile (categories, services, Q&A, weekly posts, photo uploads), you're missing the most direct pipeline from voice search to foot traffic or phone calls.

For businesses with multiple locations, this needs to be systematised — not done once and forgotten.

The Measurement Problem: How Do You Know If It's Working?

Here's the uncomfortable truth: standard Google Search Console data doesn't show you how often your content is cited in AI Overviews or voice results. You can't see "AI Overview impressions" for your site yet in any reliable way.

What you can track:

  • Featured snippet wins — these correlate strongly with AI Overview citation
  • Branded search volume trends — are more people searching your name after seeing you in AI answers?
  • Organic click-through rate changes — if your rankings hold but CTR drops, AI Overviews are likely absorbing your impressions
  • Direct traffic increases — users who get your brand name from an AI answer and navigate directly

The Strategic Shift Indian Businesses Need to Make

The old model was: rank on page one, get clicks, convert. That model is being disrupted. The new model is: be the answer that AI surfaces, build enough trust and brand recognition that users seek you out directly, and convert on the basis of authority — not just traffic.

This requires a different kind of SEO strategy — one built around topical authority, structured content, and multi-format presence rather than just keyword targeting and backlink volume.

Indian businesses that figure this out in 2025–2026 will have a compounding advantage. The window to establish that authority before every competitor catches on is right now — and it's closing faster than most people realise.
